1-31 Jan 2010. Buck has settled down. Will this be the spot? Most juveniles have pretty much settled down by the end of January, although some keep exploring.
1-28 Feb 2010. Buck seems to have found his spot. Hope we get a new image without the cloud cover.
Maps should look like this for another 14 months.
1-31 March 2010. More of the same.
1-30 Apr 2010. The points along the southern shore of Lake Maracaibo represent a one-day junket on 10 Apr.
1-31 May 2010. Back to his favorite turf.
1-30 June 2010. Same bird, same location, different balloon color.
1-31 July 2010. Same bird, same location, same balloon color.
1-31 Aug 2010. Same old, same old. If I didn't know better, I'd be saying that we expect to see him stay here for another 8 months. But I have looked into my crystal ball and predict changes.
1-10 Sept 2010. This was a real surprise. With the exception of Claws, who never did pick one spot and stick with it for his 18 months on the wintering grounds, we've never had a bird pull up stakes so late in his stay.
Buck got to South America on 4 Oct '09 and found the spot he just returned to on the shores of the Gulf of Venezuela two days later. He spent most of October, November, and December based there, but did make several long exploratory loops around northwestern Venezuela. He finally moved down to the western shore of Lake Maracaibo in late December. Now, 10 months later, he's moved back up to his first HQ.
This sort of behavior might be likely if there were some seasonality to the fish stocks down there. I've asked a Venezuelan colleague if he can shed any light on the matter.
1-15 Sept 2010. Well, that was another surprise. He spent 3 whole days on the shores of the Gulf of Venezuela before high-tailin' it back to his favorite spot on Lake Maracaibo. Guess the fishing up there wasn't as good as he remembered it. You know how reality so often falls short of those youthful memories. Even if it was only 10 months ago.

16 Sept - 15 Oct 2010. A week after his little junket around Lake Maracaibo, Buck took another spin around his back yard. This time it was just an over-nighter. After convincing himself that there wasn't better fishing anywhere else, he settled back down at his home away from home.
15-31 Oct 2010. Buck was back to his usual wandering around for the last half of October.
23 Oct - 11 Nov 2010. While Buck was doing his thing on the shores of Lake Maracaibo, Belle, our Martha's Vineyard juvenile, spent some time in the neighborhood. She was 40 miles (67 km) up the coast for a couple of weeks. We thought she was going to settle down there, but on 10 Nov, she took off again. As it turned out, she still had almost 1,500 mi (2,400 km) to go before she stopped migrating way down in Brazil.
1-30 Nov 2010. Another month putzing around his normal turf. The farthest points in his lakeside home range are about 12 mi (19 km) apart.
1-31 Dec 2010. More of the same. He should head north for the first time in around 4 or 5 months.
