DJ - 1-15
May 2013.
DJ is our first cell-tower transmittered bird on
Martha's Vineyard. If you didn't follow our
Westport River birds last year and are used to
the data from the satellite transmitters, this
looks like (and is!) one heck of a lot of data.
The satellite transmitters are limited by how
much data they can send up to a satellite, so we
only got about 12 hourly locations per day. We
now can get that many locations per hour with
the new transmitters. It's going to take a while
to figure out how to present those data
efficiently.
For the first 2 weeks we followed DJ, he was doing
almost all his fishing at Tisbury Great Pond,
about 10 miles from his nest on Chappaquiddick. |

4 May 2013 -
With the new cell-tower transmitters giving us
locations every few minutes, we can now see in
real detail how our birds get around. DJ has
been hunting Deep Bottom Cover (the cluster of
points at the far west of his points in this
map). We can see that when he left the nest and
was heading towards his favorite fishing spot,
he didn't go straight there. Rather, he sort of
moseyed over checking out various ponds and
coves along the way to see if he might get lucky
before getting to the current mother lode of
(presumably) herring of some sort in Deep
Bottom. When he headed back, it was pretty much
a straight shot. He was bringing home the bacon! |

DJ 16-21 May
-
DJ continues to do much of his fishing at
Deep Bottom Cove on Tisbury Great Pond. He's
also started to spend more time around Katama
Bay. |
|
DJ 22-28 May
-
DJ's nest failed at some point in
May--we're not sure exactly when. At this point,
he was spending days over at Deep Bottom without
returning to his nest. |
|
DJ 29 May - 5 June -
DJ came back home and is spending quite a
bit of time at the opening from Katama Bay to
the Atlantic Ocean. |
|
DJ 6-12 June
-
DJ made one trip back to Deep Bottom, but
the herring party seems to be over there. |
