8 April 2005. Home
at last! After taking care of CT and RI
on the 7th, Bluebeard arrived at his nest sometime on the morning of the
8th. The location just north of his nest was at 8:30AM, probably as he was
on his final approach to the nest.
This is three weeks after the first Ospreys were
seen on the Vineyard this year. Why was he so late? The Taylors (human
residents on Bluebeard's property) report that last year he arrived around
the 6th of April, so it seems this is his normal schedule. An Osprey was
seen on his pole about three days before he got home. This may have been
his mate, waiting patiently (?) for him. (Usually the males arrive before the females.)
In the days since
his arrival, three birds have been seen on the nest pole, but all seems to
have settled down.
The trip took 24 days and covered 3,420 miles
(5,652 km). He averaged 143 miles/day, or 236 km/day. His trip south took
35 days--he was in more of a hurry to get home!

the happy couple on their nest.]
