2 April 2005. Bluebeard's
transmitter is malfunctioning, but in a relatively good way. Instead of
its normal cycle of 10 hours on and 23 hours off (to save data download
expenses), it is now broadcasting 24 hours a day. This means we're getting
details of the trip that we don't normally have access to. On the morning
of the 31st, he left the Jacksonville area probably between 8 and 9AM.
This seems to be a pattern--he's not getting off at the crack of dawn each
day.
He only moved about 140 miles. He spent the
afternoon in the extensive marshes between Savannah, GA, and Hilton Head
Island, SC. He backtracked a bit and spent the night near the river north
of Savannah.
On the first, he made another short trip, only 95
miles up to Lake Merion in SC. (He stopped here on the way south.)
On the 2nd, with some strong winds behind him, he
moved 210 miles, and spent the night about 20 miles east of Raleigh, NC.
The Osprey-ometer now reads 2739 miles (4556 km).
He's averaging 171 miles/day (285 km/day). He seems to be retracing his
southbound route, which was 3600 miles. This means he has about 850 miles
to go, or about 5 more days at his current rate.
