31 March 2005. Our
boy has taken care of Florida. He covered 212 miles on the 30th and spent
the night near Jacksonville. He has apparently left the coast to spend a
bit of time on the St. John's River, which seems to be irresistible to
Ospreys. Almost all the birds we've followed heading north and south seem
to stop here.
The weather looks
favorable for movement today. There's a gentle breeze (5 mph) from the
south, which will strengthen and shift to the southeast this afternoon. We
have the opposite situation that triggered the south-bound birds'
rapid migration in the fall (a high pressure system to the northwest and a
hurricane to the southeast). There is a high pressure system moving off
the coast with a low coming in from the west. Because of the wind flow
around low and highs, this combination provides tail winds for north-bound
migrants in the spring.
The Osprey-ometer now reads 2293 miles (3840 km).
