11 Sept 06: Comet is
on the move. He left home sometime on the 8th and flew at least 238 mi
(383 km) to south central NJ. Sometime on the 9th he flew across Delaware
Bay and landed in southeastern DE, quite close to the nests of our
Delaware birds (Della, Erica, and Lew). At this time, both Lew and Della
are far to the south, but Erica is still around her nest. It looks like
Comet stopped on a river that feeds into Rehobeth Bay. On the 10th (when
his radio was off) he flew 172 mi (277 km) south, crossing Chesapeake Bay
and settling down for the night on the shores of Albemarle Sound, NC. In
just three days, he has flown 498 mi (801 km), averaging 166
miles/day.
Our Vineyard bird, Moshup, is still in RI and my
$20 that he would beat Comet to Cuba seems to be at risk, to put it mildly.
