2 Nov.  2005 (cont.).
This was the end of the road for Bluebeard. As we saw in the previous map, he was following his path from the year before and just a few hundred miles short of his wintering grounds.
In this aerial view from Google Earth we see that he was crossing unbroken forest on the 31st of October. This was the last good fix from his transmitter, so we presume he died here (he did not return to his nest in the spring of '06).
Scroll down to see a closer view of his last known location....

The evidence is certainly circumstantial, but when a healthy Osprey that has just crossed the whole Caribbean disappears crossing a human settlement in the midst of unbroken forest, we strongly suspect that he was shot.
We do have to remember that not everyone on the planet shares our conservation ethic. For a settler in the vast expanses of the rainforest, it is really hard to believe that there could ever be an end to the wildlife around him, and thus understandable that wild birds are shot.
