Just in case you didn't think migration is pretty miraculous, here is a map with Bluebeard's routes from 2004 and 2005 superimposed.
Keep in mind that his departure from Hispaniola in 2004 might well have been from the same cape whence he launched the trans-Caribbean trip this year, so the routes might be even more similar. In either case, he arrived at the spot where he is today on the 28th of October last year and this year on the 31st. The locations for the two years are 29 mi. (46 km) apart!
Ospreys definitely ascribe to the "if it ain't broke-don't fix it" school of migration planning. If a spot had enough fish to keep you going over one winter, why go anywhere else?
Finding the same stretch of river in the midst of thousands of square miles of unbroken rainforest is an astonishing feat of navigation, and is probably based on memorizing landmarks along the route.
