15 Nov. Homer finished his migration on the 29th of November, arriving back at the lake he left back in April. There can be no doubt that once he arrived on the shores of Colombia, he knew exactly where he wanted to be. A week later, he was on familiar ground.
We have seen adults arrive in South America and make a bee-line, flying fast and directly to their wintering area. This is the first time we've seen a young bird do this and, remarkably, cover ground he'd never been over (east of Lake Maracaibo). (See the map below to compare this trip to his first fall migration.)
Homer's trip south covered 2946 miles (4740 km) in 32 days. On his first migration south, it took him over 4000 miles (6,400 km) to find this spot.
Once he found his lake, he has been commuting back and forth between it and the nearby mountains, just as he did last year.
Homer's wanderings in 2005 and early 2006 as he explored South America for the first time in search of a reliable fishing hole.
