11 Sept. 2006: Moshup
has left Martha's Vineyard, a month and a few days after we put his
satellite transmitter on him. He made the move when his radio was off (as
usual!) and spent the 3rd and 4th around Beach Pond on the CT/RI border.
(Not sure about the cartographic skills of the person who named this one!
Sure looks like a long way to the beach from there.) Moshup may have flown
right over our Rhode Island bird, Comet, who is still hanging around his
nest on Conanicut (Jamestown) Island in Narragansett Bay.
Two of our other tagged youngsters spent time
fishing freshwater sites in CT and RI, an observation that dovetails very
neatly with the behavior we witnessed in adults with failed nests. Several
of these birds commuted between their nest areas and inland sites in
southern New England prior to migrating. It now seems likely that these birds were going back
to fishing holes they discovered as youngsters.
As of 11 Sept., he's still there.
