22 Sept: Erica did
not make it. She flew another 395 mi (636 km) before going down at sea.
Her whole trip out over the Atlantic was about 800 miles, which meant she
was flying non-stop for about 30 hours. Simply put, she ran out of
gas.
We don't know to what extent the winds were pushing her
eastward, but if this was a genetic inclination, that gene is no longer in
the Osprey gene pool. Natural selection is ruthless and migration is such
an ordeal for inexperienced birds that it is no wonder so few return from
their first migration.
