19 March 2005.  Bluebeard is heading home, and off to a bit of a late start. Some Ospreys return to Martha's Vineyard around the time he began his return trip. It almost seems that he got wind of how tough the winter was back home and decided to wait a bit for the weather up north to lighten up. I'm being facetious here, of course, but there are many questions about migration that remain unanswered.  One of the great mysteries is how birds decide when it's time to return to the breeding grounds? Changes in daylength, the cue for starting the southward migration, doesn't seem to make sense for a bird like an Osprey because some birds winter north of the equator and some south of it. So, for some birds, when it's time to fly north the day will be getting longer as spring approaches (north of the equator), while for those south of the equator the day will be getting shorter.
