16 Oct: Elsie made it to
Venezuela on the 15th of October. The locations for her out in the middle
of the Caribbean are around dawn on the 15th, so she took off from Puerto
Rico
late in the day on the 14th and, as is usual for this leg of the trip,
made some of it at night.
She is the first Osprey tracked that has gone so
far east before heading for South America. We now expect her to rest a
bit and then head off to her habitual wintering area (where will it be?) Adults are quite
faithful to a fishing hole that has proven productive in the past.
I've indicated on the map where Jaws, the
youngster from Chilmark, has been fishing since his arrival on 3 Oct.
This was the last signal from Elsie. We can only assume
she ran into bad weather near the coast and went down. Alternatively,
she might have made it to shore, exhausted, and not survived much longer,
although this is less likely than the ditching at sea scenario. Had she made
it to shore, we should have picked up some signals from her.
