21 Sept:
So why did Jaws, Tasha, and Elsie take off on
the 19th and make big moves south? They had very strong winds behind them. A
massive high pressure system was settled in over northern New England and
Tropical Storm/Hurricane Jeanne was off the coast of Florida. The strong
differences in pressure led to very high winds. Winds flow clockwise around a high pressure
system, and those around a low flow counter clockwise. As a
rule, winds tend to follow the isobars, so I've added some white arrows to
show which way the winds were blowing on the 19th. Perfect for migrating
south along the coast.
(This is why a high pressure system brings cooling
temperatures as it arrives--winds from the north bring cold air. As the system moves east, the winds
swing around to southerlies bringing warm air into the region (the arrows on
the left).)
