UNC Charlotte's Biology Department emphasizes biomedical research and has only recently begun awarding doctorates in the biomedical/"skin-in" arenas. The small subset of our biology department faculty working in whole-animal, ecology and evolutionary biology can only supervise M.Sc. students. A few M.Sc. students pursue studies of conservation and ecological topics under the supervision of Dr. Larry Barden or me.

I am, or was, the major advisor (or co-advisor) for the following students:

bullet Lisa Beckstrom - Habitat selection and foraging ecology in Neotropical migratory birds and changes in riparian habitat along the Catawba River basin in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. M.Sc. Thesis defended in June 1998. Read the abstract.
bulletMarek Smith - Comparisons of short-term survivorship, dispersal, and diet in wild and captive-raised Barn Owls (Tyto alba). M.Sc. Thesis defended in 2000. Read the abstract.
bulletEric Harrold - Comparing habitat use and prey preferences in non-modified and human-modified habitats, and measuring home range size highly modified (suburban)  in Barred Owls.Thesis defended in April 2003. Read the abstract
bulletJim Mason - Barred Owls in suburban habitats--Source or sink populations? Read the abstract.
bulletElaine Corvidae - An Eco-morphological analysis of the shoulder structure of Ospreys, Red-tailed Hawks, and Cooper's Hawks. Read the abstract
bulletJennifer Rettew - Joined our program in the fall 2003 semester and has begun studying Ospreys on Martha's Vineyard. She studied a series of nests to look for correlations between the rate of food delivery and reproductive success. Read the abstract
bulletCrystal Fox - Matriculated in Jan. 2003 and is studying habitat fragmentation and upland breeding salamanders.
bulletCorrie Cauble - Studied the diets of Barred Owls in suburban and rural habitats using video cameras mounted in nest. Data from over 1,500 prey deliveries were analyzed! Read the abstract

and was part of the thesis committee for

bulletBeth Bockoven - Peregrines.... M.Sc. Thesis defended 22 April 1999 at Western Carolina University. Read the abstract.
bulletDavid Luther -  The Evolution of Communication in a Complex Acoustic Environment. Ph.D. Thesis defended April 2008 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
