10 May 2007.
After feeding in the Zapata Swamps on Cuba's south shore for about 16 months, Conanicus began his first migration north on the 29th of April. On the 30th he found what appears to be a fish farm (see GoogleEarth image below), where we got signals from him through the 9th of May. On the 10th the signal moved north a few miles.
It looks like Conanicus died about as soon as he arrived at the reservoir/fish farm. The activity counter on his transmitter didn't change after the 30th. The move north could be real (someone taking the transmitter home) or just an inaccurate location.

This was a terribly frustrating end to our study of this bird. Nonetheless, we did get data on the timing of his first trip north and confirmation of the perils of migration.

This is the man-made reservoir where we last had signals from Conanicus' radio. I suspect those are fish ponds below the dam.
