22-28 Oct. Homer is zeroing in on his wintering grounds--assuming he returns to the area he settled down in last winter (indicated with an arrow). We've seen adults returning to their wintering areas do just what Homer's doing now. They land in S.A. and, often after a breather to rest up from crossing the Caribbean, take off on a bee-line for their favorite fishing spot. Homer landed in Colombia and passed into Venezuela sometime on the 26th. It looks like he is a day away from the reservoir that was his base of operations earlier this year..     How he's doing this is the real mystery. We might assume he's navigating by landmarks, but back in '05, when he first arrived on the continent, he took a more roundabout route to his wintering area (scroll down for that map), and then just wandered around until he found a good spot. This year he seems to know right where he's going, but he's covering new ground, and it certainly appears from the 22nd on he knew where he wanted to go, where his destination was relative to his location at the time (true navigation), and that he somehow knew the shortest way to get there. Mind boggling.     I've indicated Jaws' first and second wintering areas. He's probably back at one or the other, but his transmitter gave up, so we don't really know.
