23 Oct 2006: Does anyone remember Homer's backtracking from last year? What's with these Martha's Vineyard Ospreys? Moshup retreated on the 23rd crossing back over the Cape Fear River and settling down near Topsail Beach, just east of Wilmington, DE.
He has now been on the move (sort of) for 19 days. He's flown 850 miles (1370 km). 101 of the miles have been backwards. He is averaging 45 mi/day (72 km/day) and is not going to set any records on this migration.

Here's one of Moshup's locations on the NC coast, just west of Cape Fear. In this image you can see why some of the Ospreys we have followed coming down the coast head out to Florida. It seems they really want to head south and most don't want to backtrack. When they get to Bald Head, if there's a wind from the west, they're likely to go with the flow and head south to Florida.
