Homer is keeping me busy far longer than any other Osprey we have tracked. Most have settled down by early November. Not our boy Homer!
On November 30th he moved north and west into the mountains. He spent a month there and then got the urge to move again. He moved south to the shores of Lake Maracaibo and and then east to a small reservoir for only a day. He continued moving east for the first three days of the new year.
This is what I've always expected young Ospreys would do on their first visit to the wintering grounds--arrive and then wander around in search of the perfect fishing hole. Because they don't migrate back in their second spring, they have a year and a half to find just the right spot, which they can rely upon as an adult. So far the birds we have tagged as juveniles have apparently been lucky and not had to wander much. Jaws, last year, found the perfect spot as soon as he hit South America. This year, Conanicus found a spot in Cuba much to his liking and is still there. Homer, it would seem, is pretty hard to please and got a full dose of all the migration genes floating around the Osprey population.
