With Hurricane Wilma off the Yucatan peninsula, Bluebeard left Cuba behind
and crossed over to Hispaniola on the 21st. The fix over the water between
the two islands is a very accurate one, so we know he was making this
crossing around 6 PM. He probably landed in Hispaniola after dark.
He spent the night of the 21st and part of the
22nd near St. Martz in Haiti. He roosted on the 22nd in the Dominican
Republic south of Barahona on Cabo Beata.
Shortly after noon on the 23rd he pushed off from
land and began the 400 mile (640 km) crossing of the Caribbean.
This is the stretch where we've lost most of our
birds. Don't you love a cliff-hanger?
He has flown 2241 mi (3608 km) in about 35 days. With his extended layover
in Cuba, his average distance traveled per day is down to 64 miles (108
km). On the southward migration, the birds are in no hurry.
